Sustainable Chemistry Implementation Guide

As the first U.S. retailer to announce a time-bound chemical reduction goal, we’re continually learning and refining our process, assumptions and approach.

Purpose of This Guide

The purpose of this Sustainable Chemistry Implementation Guide is to provide resources to our suppliers and consumers so they can understand the goals of the Walmart stores and Sam’s Clubs in the U.S. Commitment on Sustainable Chemistry in Consumables. This Guide follows the organization of the Commitment and provides a description, resources and measurement approach for each element.

Sustainable Chemistry Background

People want to feel good about what they buy, and our customers count on us to deliver access to safe, healthier and affordable products in a way that is sustainable. As part of our corporate mission to help people Save Money and Live Better, we believe our customers and members should not have to choose between products they can afford and products that are better for them and the environment. We look to the scientific community to guide us on this journey toward greener chemistry and we’ve worked with suppliers, NGOs (notably the Environmental Defense Fund), academics, government, and industry stakeholders to develop a company commitment on sustainable chemistry for consumable products.
